Chinese New Year 2023 falls on the 22nd of January. Are you ready?

Chinese New Year (新年) is also known as the Spring Festival (春节). Every activity during the Spring Festival has the purpose of removing the old and the bad and welcoming in the new and the good. One of the traditions of Chinese New Year is the Red Pocket (红包). By giving a Red Pocket, elders are hoping to pass on a year of good fortune and blessings to the next generation. Another version is the younger generation gives a Red Pocket to their elders as a blessing of longevity and a show of appreciation. While the tradition centres on family, the Red Pocket are given to friends, colleagues, and many other relatives. It has become a way to wish people luck in China.

YEAR OF THE RAT - CHINESE NEW YEAR!

Family feasts during Chinese New Year are extremely important to the Chinese. All family members come back to their hometowns to celebrate this significant time every year.

In the legend of the Spring Festival’s origin, this was when the monster Nian would come and terrorise the villages. The people would hide in their homes, prepare a feast with offerings to the ancestors and gods, and hope for the best.

Although every household have different customs, you will notice some common dishes at every table; dishes that even Coconut serve.

Spring rolls ( 春卷chūn Juǎn) are the most popular dish/snack in the Chinese cuisine. Traditionally they are filled with pork and vegetables, and guess what… at Coconut we have Thai Spring rolls (Por-pia Jay) with the same filling!

Dumplings (饺子 jiǎo zi) is another well-known dish, and also the most significant during Chinese New Year. By eating them, you are sending away the old and welcoming the new. You can enjoy Coconut’s very own versions, by ordering our Shrimp Dumplings or Chicken Gyozas!

Noodles, is another dish that expresses the people’s wishes for prosperity. They believe that the longer the noodle, the longer your life will be. There’s no doubt that noodles are a staple in Chinese cuisine!

Coconut Bar & Kitchen supports Berkshire Vision, a local charity.

We at Coconut Bar & Kitchen are driven by a desire to support the local community and are passionate about helping people and projects. We want to give something back to our community.

When we heard about Berkshire Vision we wanted to help and build awareness for the charity that supports and delivers services to blind and partially sighted children and adults in Berkshire.

Blindness, or a visual impairment can often reduce a child’s self-esteem and increase their sense of isolation and fear. Most attend mainstream school but cannot participate in all the activities and have limited opportunity to spend time with other partially sighted children who understand their difficulties.

For Berkshire Visions, having funds and support would help to provide safe and comfortable journeys to these key events and workshops.

Throughout the year Berkshire Vision have a comprehensive timetable of activities available for their members, such as trips to Legoland, pizza making parties, Zoo trips and sensory touch tours.

These experiences are fundamental for developing confidence and self-esteem, enabling the children to develop the pivotal social skills that are essential for later life.

We met with some of the team from Berkshire Vision and talked about how we could help. We have decided from November we will DONATE £1 from every SUNDAY BRUNCH and volunteer to help with activities.

At Coconut’s Cocktail Bar and Kitchen, we are always creating new recipes, both in the bar and in the kitchen. Our marvellous mixologists have recently launched some new cocktails that are proving to be very popular with our discerning guests; not only do they taste amazing but they look fantastic with REAL EDIBLE FLOWERS and DRY ICE ‘SMOKE’ to give added drama to your night out!

Here’s a recent review from one of our fabulous guests:

 Great lunch.  Visited for the first time today with my wife for lunch and we were very impressed. The lunch menu has loads to choose from at very reasonable prices.
We had a Beef Bibimbap and a Prawn Katsu Curry and we both really enjoyed our choices. Served piping hot and well presented and we did not have to wait long. Very pleasant attentive staff and nice surroundings as well.
We will certainly be coming back and would highly recommend it if you are in Reading one lunchtime and want to try something a bit different without getting fleeced with an extortionate bill.

There’s really not much we can add to that! Thank you Brian for taking the time to mention us. We really do appreciate it and so glad you had such a great time with us.

A Midsummer Night King’s Dream

This Friday 21st June marks the Northern Hemisphere summer solstice. The longest day and shortest night of the year. The day when the sun is at its highest point in the sky giving us the longest period of daylight. A day that is also known as Midsummer.

And, as we all wonder how we got to Midsummer when summer seems to be having trouble starting, here at our cocktail bar and restaurant we have created some fabulous new cocktails to take your mind off the weather. Inspiration has been taken from the world of fantasy. The new additions are exciting on the taste buds and served up with a generous helping of drama.

There’s a reason to celebrate, its National Cosmopolitan Day!

Yes it is! Tuesday May 7th is NATIONAL COSMOPOLITAN DAY, the perfect reason to raise your glass and toast one of the most iconic of cocktails and at our cocktail bar and restaurant you can get the BEST ONE IN TOWN!

 No-one can really be certain where the first Cosmopolitan originated from and there are many credible tales that claim its creation. One thing we can be certain of is that it’s rise in popularity in the 90`s was thanks to Carrie Bradshaw and her friends. Hardly an episode of Sex in the City aired without at least one clink of Cosmo filled martini glasses from the girls as they chin chinned their way through a lazy lunch or pre dinner drinks. They certainly inspired their viewing nations to try this forgotten treasure and bring it back to life and, still today, it features high on the cocktail list in any reputable establishment.

At Coconut Bar and Kitchen we pride ourselves on our FANTASTIC cocktail bar and mixologists. Our drinks menu contains a mixture of Classics and Coconut Originals. The choice is huge and each one created with love and care using high end spirits and mixers, fresh juices and amazing garnishes.

“In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight…”

Well it may do tonight but it certainly won’t be on Saturday May 4th as it’ll be dancing away at our cocktail bar and restaurant to celebrate our 5th BIRTHDAY. Yes indeed, we have a really Special Treat for you, a Traditional CHINESE LION DANCE at 9.30PM to get you in the party mood.

As always on a Saturday our Happy Hour will run from 4:30-7pm, the menu will be as fabulous as ever, the cocktails as amazing as always and the DJ as brilliant as usual. The best party in town will be at Coconut Bar and Kitchen so come and celebrate with us, and, as an extra treat, we’re staying open for an extra hour until 3am.

Please don’t forget to reserve a table as soon as possible if you wish to eat as we do get booked up extremely quickly at weekends.

A cracking Easter weekend awaits you!

With Easter only a few days away it’s time to dust off your bonnet and get down to Coconut Bar & Kitchen for a bank holiday weekend of celebration!

From THURSDAY 18th APRIL through to EASTER SUNDAY we will be in the party mood. Whether you want to come in for a relaxed family lunch, early cocktails and dinner, early cocktails and a later dinner or just early cocktails, late cocktails and even later cocktails, our cocktail bar and restaurant can offer you just what you want.

Our Live DJ will be in action from 9.30pm on Friday and Saturday night as always and, just for Easter, will also be getting the party going on Sunday night too, and with our Sunday Brunch available between 11.30pm and 6.30pm and Happy Hour All Day it certainly will be the place to be.
Please make sure if you want to eat, during the day or evening, that you book in advance as we do get booked up very quickly. We’d hate you to be disappointed. 

Minnie was certainly not disappointed when she came to visit us the other day. Thank you for leaving this glowing review Minnie! Maybe we’ll see you again over Easter?

Fabulous!!  Highly recommend Coconut Bar and Kitchen. I went with friends for cocktails and food. The cocktails are really tasty, the food is amazing. I have been a few times and never been disappointed with it. One of my friends is vegetarian and the choice for her was brilliant. They do nearly all the dishes with chicken, fish, beef or vegetables and she had the most choice she ever has had at a restaurant. The staff are polite and efficient. We had a brilliant meal and will be returning very soon.

It’s the perfect solution to the munchies without resorting to kebabs and burgers.
